Some frequently asked questions...

Q.) Will band/chorus/orchestra be fun with a lot of laughing and smiling???
A) YES of course! After all, that's why we play instruments and sing isn't it?

Q.) When is band/chorus/orchestra practice?
A) Full 6th Grade Band, Full 6th Grade Chorus and Full 6th Grade Orchestra meet during 8th Period, also called Advisory. A detailed schedule of this period will be distributed in September.

Q.) When are lessons?
A) Lessons are scheduled through-out the day, for ~20 minutes. An individual schedule is given to every student at the beginning of the school year.

Q.) Will I miss a class for lessons?
A) Yes, but we are very flexible and do everything we can to make it as easy for you as possible to attend a weekly lesson group. Each lesson is only about 20 minutes. If you have test, quiz or review in your other class we can always find a time to reschedule your lessons. And each time you come to a lesson you can earn points towards prizes. Stickers are kept of your SRMS VIP Backstage Lesson Pass. Every 5 stickers - you get a prize!

Q.) Does it cost anything to join band/chorus/orchestra?
A) No. However, at the beginning of the year students are responsible for purchasing our lesson book, ~$15 (which is used all three years here at SRMS), which we use at school lessons, large ensemble rehearsals, and for home practice.

Q.) Do we get a grade for band/chorus/orchestra?
A) Yes, no worries though, if you show up, have a smile on your face and try your best you'll be sure to get an "A"!

Q.) What instruments are in Concert Band?
A) Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Percussion.

Q.) What instruments are in Orchestra?
A) Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

Q.) What instruments are in Chorus?
A) your voices! and sometimes piano players are needed to accompany the chorus (see Mrs. Mount about auditioning)

Q.) Can you start as a beginner in middle school?
A.) Yes. The directors will announce when beginner lessons start in September.

Q.) Can you change instruments in middle school?
A.) Yes, you may change instruments in middle school. However, the director usually has you keep playing your old instrument until you are good enough with your new one to play in band or orchestra.

Q.) Who is in jazz band/symphonic strings/select chorus/wind ensemble and how do you get in?
A.) These are the 'Select Groups' at SRMS. Every member must audition to get a spot in these groups. Each director will post all of the audition information in September. The groups are open to all 6th, 7th and 8th Graders.

These groups require a lot more commitment, but it pays off. You're able to play and sing up to 4 days a week here at school and we do lots of cool things!

Q) Do we go on any trips in middle school or perform anywhere exciting.
A.) Yes! All of the directors here at SRMS are always looking for cool performance opportunities for our musicians. Here are a few examples...The Jazz Band and Symphonic Strings go to a music competition up at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom each Spring (the Select Chorus will be joining us next year!)
